Some Galanthus species leaf anatomy pictures
« on: July 01, 2010, 01:18:34 PM »
In connection with a long pause in snowdrop posts, I hang here a few no less beautiful than flowering drops, I think  ;D, pictures of Galanthus leaf cross-sections. It's taken from a series of my own anatomical studies in the genus; I tried to explore all the known species and discutable races (e.g. to compare so called G. kemulariae, lagodechianus, cabardensis, etc......).
Azur blau staining, x4; x40.
I've already got for such project near 26 taxons (read slides), but I have a lack in live material of G. cilicicus, krasnovii, transcaucasicus and snogerupii ONLY  :'(

Thanks Brian! Please, if you like so the vascular bundles  ;D, pay attention to presence of UNIQUE! additional vascular bundles abaxially in G. trojanus cross-section, such structures I never seen yet in any other drop species!

Anne, pity, but I have only cross-section of G. woronowii  :-[, true G. ikariae I will receive only this year from Hans and Melvyn!

Dima, these photographs of your investigations are not only scientifically interesting, they are also beautiful to look at: proof that science and art can go hand in hand!

I am most surprised at the enormous variations in these slides .... I imagine I am not the only person  to see these and be fascinated by them and intriqued to learn more..... 8)

Maggi, many thanks! It isn't all slides you have seen on pic, I have 2 such boxes with slides plus! Simply, now I'm working on 2 monographes devoted to the microevolution aspects of genus Galanthus and Genus Galanthus in Ukraine. There will be many interesting things about snowdrops I'm sure  8)

Melvyn, many many thanks!! Firstly, it should be published in Russian or Ukrainian here in Ukraine (we (co-authors) still have to find funding to edit........), so for now, I even have not yet thought about the English version........
