Title: Dr Dowling Donald Munro - plantsman and man of medicine.
Post by: Maggi Young on February 19, 2019, 01:01:01 PM
Dr Dowling Donald Munro - plantsman and  man of medicine.

It was with great sadness that I learned  recently of the  death at the age of 87 of that charming gardener, galanthophile  and esteemed  former consultant dermatologist, Dowling  D. Munro, of  Buckinghamshire.
It was always a pleasure to  correspond with him and he will be sorely missed  not only by  his wife  Ella (Isabella), his four daughters and all his family, but also by gardening and other friends  of this  busy and  enthusiastic gentleman.  Dowling died peacefully on Sunday, 10th February 2019 - at his local AGS group meeting on the  previous Friday he had been in fine form so his sudden death was as unexpected as is  sad.
His funeral details are now announced and I share them here:
A private  funeral service will be followed by a service of thanksgiving for the life of Dowling Munro on at 11.15am on Wednesday 27th February,  at Amersham Free Church, Woodside Road, Amersham on the Hill, HP6 6AJ.  The thanksgiving service is open to all. No flowers please.

Our sincere condolences are sent to Ella and all the family of Dowling  at this  sad time.

Thank you for posting this information, Maggi.  I only knew Dr Munro slightly; I once traded some snowdrops of 'Hollis', a large early-flowering snowdrop that he originated, for 'Green Light' (one of mine).  He was generous with the quantity he gave me, kindly towards me, as a newcomer to the world of snowdrops, and we corresponded afterwards.  I note that he was an occasional contributor to the Forum and posted here to mark the passing of two other celebrated galanthophiles, Ruby Baker and Margaret Owen.

I understand that his obituary was posted in The Times newspaper and a copy can be viewed here:  http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/thetimes-uk/obituary.aspx?n=downing-donald-munro&pid=191583667 (http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/thetimes-uk/obituary.aspx?n=downing-donald-munro&pid=191583667) (although Maggi has already given the important details).
