Recently it was suggested that the forum should put together a surplus Galanthus list. I think this would be very hard to do and keep everyone happy. Why not ask here what you are looking for and let someone PM you?
-
Mark, there are already pages on the forum for Plants Wanted and Seeds Wanted :-X
-
I can see Mark's point. There's so much swapping goes on between snowdrop growers that it might be useful to have a specialised swapping thread here, or as Mark puts it, a 'what I want' thread, where you can see what people want and can offer it if you have it, and also see what people might like in return if they offer you something.
-
Sorry Maggi I thought it had more relevance here

There may be something to be said for keeping you fanatics all in the one place, anyway! ::) :P ;D
-
I would hope those asking dont ask for the impossible.
-
Now a list of the impossible would be useful to have. I bet many of us have a wish list that includes far too many of these and they could be posted. It would be interesting to hear what the experts say about some of them as to availability or when they might hit the market.

Okay, let's make allowances for the fact that John is on the other side of the Atlantic. :D
-

I'm looking for .................. a BIG piece of paper for my list :)
Sadly I have only one of those and my one bulb of Sandhill Gate has taken a long time making up to three :-[
Good luck John :)
-
.....a modest list though.

Certainly some of the snowdrops on the list are very readily available in the UK. Is there a legal means of getting them to Canada?
-
and some will take a very long time to be listed

Come on now Mark, details, details. I can pm you the list and maybe just delete the available ones, paste and post?
johnw
-
I'll let you have some off that list. Deeley Boppers?! Only one photo ever shown and only one plant.

Alan - There are a couple of nurseries that are cleared to issue a phyto. It's a costly venture and we usually pool over here.
johnw
-
JohnW, maybe I can help you with KARLA E, NARRENGESICHT. But also DICKERCHEN is in the pipeline
-
I know you do have not heard from me for a while, but if anyone has an 'Ailwyn' for sale I'd pleased to hear from them.
Mike
ps I'm in the UK
-
Ivy Cottage have it listed this year
-
Hi Mark thanks for responding
Do you have an address or website info?
Mike
-
I'll send you a message when I get home form work
-
Mark, Hagen and others - many thanks for your kind and generous offers. I am a bit overwhelmed. I will send you pm's.
I wish a few other would send it their lists as I am feeling a bit too privileged at the moment.

Cheers Mark
-
Good grief, I only have two on John's list, and I am in the UK :o
I haven't got a deep desire for any of them..... except the fat and lovely Dickerchen, which I have only seen photos of but which I do like.
There are a couple of others I like, too, but I'm hopeful of successful orders this spring.... Diggory and Tubby Merlin..... do you notice a theme developing in my tastes? ;)
-
Maggi - I can help you out with Diggory and maybe the Tubby Merlin too if your order doesn't materialize.
We do after all have to keep these fine snowdrop nurseries in business too.
Now about that custard pie of Lesley's and her apricots in jar... ..... another swap thread?
johnw
-
John, you are too kind ....but I hope my fat chaps will come through, a friend is helping!
I hear what you say about another Swap thread... for the culinary treats...... this is a delicate matter..... so many foodstuffs are on banned lists nowadays, as with the plantworld and all the national regulations must be observed..... so, I propose that all samples come here to me, for extensive testing, and I will forward anything suitable through the proper channels.... how does that sound? ::) ;D
-
Ivy Cottage have it listed this year
Is Ivy Cottage different from IvyCroft or is that a mistake?

Yes Maggi Ivycroft is Roger Norman Leominster in the West of England, Ivy Cottage Mike Broadhurst Suffolk in the East of England ;D ;) ;D
-
Yes thats the problem I'm having....................I can get info on Ivycroft but not Ivy Cottage.
Sheesh its difficult keeping up when I supposed to working.....................having to keep a look out for the boss so he doesn't catch me lurking on the forum!

Just as I expected. And just how will we know when these few paltry molecules are forwarded and have arrived?

-

-

I am sure my neighbours must think I am mad as I have just guffawed out extremely loudly at reading that!
-
Does any one know where i could get hold of Galanthus nivalis 'Kersen' My mum and i both started collecting snowdrops at the same time and her name is cherry and as kersen is Dutch for cherries i thought it would be a great one for her collection. thank you for your help.
-
Emma in all my years of visiting gardens and private collections I have never seen 'Kersen'. I havent seen it on any lists either.
-
I meant the proper governmental channels, you lot, not gastro-intestinal channels :o I don't know... ::)
Just as I expected. And just how will we know when these few paltry molecules are forwarded and have arrived?
You'll either get an envelope with a few crumbs and a creased piece of tinfoil, or, more likely, an email, saying it wasn't allowed through customs and has been confiscated. Simple. ;D
Quite a few of the drops mentioned so far I've never even heard of! Good luck with your hunting and swapping!

Between John and Martin my cover at work was nearly blown. I too lost it completely for good few minutes. Puzzled looks from afar. I fear Maggi's response so may have to sign off before I dare read it.

Gentlemen, think yourselves lucky not to have been privy to the message exchange that went on between Martin and myself the other day.....Ian was quite overcome( for various reasons) and people passing in the street outside turned to see where the hysterical laughter came from. You would now surely be seeking alternative employment ;D
-
Back from the SW and gratified to find that my suggestion is going somewhere with this thread. I guess you have to be patient even with good ideas.....

I'm looking for:
- A pure white, non-poculiform snowdrop (I found one two years ago, fell in love with it then the next year it was completely normal).
- G. elwesii E.A. Bowles (yes, I know that's an impossibility, I just like it very much.
- A really really symmetric double (I 've heard tales of one found in Belgium. Edit: I'm told it's called Melanie S.).
- Trumps or South Hayes or similar (I got Trym last year).
- Margery Fish.
- Any snowdrop that would reliably flower in September or April in my garden.
- Quite probably others I have not thought of.
I'm offering:
- G. plicatus Wendy's Gold
- G. elwesii Richard Ayres
- G. Tubby Merlin
- G. plicatus Percy Picton
- G. "Cressida" (a pseudo Greatorex double I found locally; some people like this one, others don't).
- And G. nivalis Green Light
But I have only a very few of each available and only one or two of Green Light (for which I strike a hard bargain)!
-
Hello Alan,
the symmetric double you're talking about was found by Valentin Wijnen and is called Melanie S. Here you can see the picture: http://www.galanthus.be/index.cfm?fuseaction=art&art_id=3590
He's not yet selling this snowdrop but if you have something he wants maybe you he'll swap.
-
Hi Alan
Valentin Wijnen also posted about that snowdrop on here last year:

So much for my memory! Anyway, I would like one if Valantin is reading this and wants a Green Light!

I'm going to interpret the title of this thread as 'I want' and say I want a huge glasshouse where I can grow my snowdrops in raised beds under glass, where I can provide just enough warmth at flowering time to make them all open up to be seen at their best every day, not just once a fortnight when the sun shines and we get a mildish day outside, where they can be seen at eye-level and studied closely, where they'll fill the air with their perfume, where they won't be flattened and muddied by wind and rain, where the slugs and narcissus fly can't reach them (mesh on windows), and where I can do my pollinating easily and warmly without having to kneel in mud with my brush and jeweler's eyeglass.
Of course, it would have to be like Dr Who's Tardis, tiny on the outside to fit in my small garden, but colossal on the inside.
This is all brought on by bringing new seedlings into the house after lifting them as they flower in their beds and potting them up for closer examination inside. You can get so much enjoyment (especially in the evening, after dark) from a snowdrop in a pot, seeing it day after day or evening after evening with its flower open, and smelling its scent, instead of seeing ti day after day closed up in the cold of the garden.
So, anyone who has a huge glass Tardis they'd like to swap for, well money basically (not much, though, these days) can pm me.

Sorry to those who get email notifications. For some reason my entire last post was underlined have edited it on the forum.
