Hi everyone. This is my first post since recently joining and it is a query over the ID of a Colchicum species I saw on Zakynthos last September. It looks like a small version of C. autumnale and could be just because it was at 750m on the summit of Mount Vrachionas or could it be a different species. A photo is viewable at:

There are other pics of plants there from my trip, including Leucojum valentinum. See them at:

TIA for any help.
Cheers,
Steve.

Hi, Steve, great to have you join us. I look forward to viewing those photos... very soon........ :D
Well, I think it is C. autumnale.... but let's hear what others think, too.
Had a brief look at your other ( lovely!) photos.... the Fritillaria pontica and Helleborus orientalis 'Harvington Pink Speckled' are especially yummy!

Great photos, Steve. I'm trying to develop the patience to photograph arthropods, still trying.
The photo of Timon lepidus really gave me a start: I wonder how long it had survived on the Salisbury Plain?

Thanks for the welcome Maggi - and the quick response! I didn't expect a reply quite so quickly. I'm glad you liked my photostream.

Hi Jim, thanks for the compliments :) Yes, patience is something you need in bucket loads - particularly for dragonflies and grasshoppers! From what I can gather, the lizard was found last summer when it was still juvenile so had probably only recently escaped or been 'released'. Not sure if it would survive our winters seeing as it's a Mediterranean species - particularly on Salisbury Plain which can get quite harsh in the winter.

I did a bit of research on the net to find out more about Leucojum valentinum only to find it could have been split or separated to a different genus - Acis ionica. Does anyone know the current status of this 'split'?
-
I agree with Maggi. It is Colchicum autumnale.

Hi Steve ,
I have postet last year something about Acis ionica :

Franz and Maggi, would you both kindly look at my images of a colchicum on the Colchicum 2009 thread and tell me your thoughts regarding its ID. I'm assuming C. autumnale for the reasons given there but I'm not sure, now that I see the picture in Steve's link. Really want to know this please.

Thank you Franz. And I look forward with interest to look at your post Hans.
Cheers,
Steve.
