Post by: Kovacs Pal on January 13, 2010, 05:22:51 PM
Hello,
I would like to ask this is a Soldanella carpatica or S. montana. I took this photo in Tatra

And once more plant. It should be a Cerastium sp. It is from Tatra too

Thank you in advance

Hello Kovács Pál,

the genus Soldanella is not one of the easiest to identify to the species. You need to look at very small characteristics like glandular hairs and interstaminal scales to determine the species
There's a very good key for determination here: http://cgi.math.muni.cz/~niederle/solklic.html

I agree with Wim.  S.carpatica can often (but not always) show red undersides to the leaves - your first image would suggest the significantly larger (in all it's parts) S. villosa, but I am not certain if this species would pertain to the Tatras?
