Mark it's really heavy rain here, shower after shower. I think we are getting what Inverness have been having. Not good for golf  ;D  that's coming from a golf widow.

Yes, absolutely torrential rain here.... I wouldn't mind but it's interfering with our satellite signal for the TV coverage of Le Tour de France.  >:(

I wonder if we have entered an era where proper summers are part of the past and dry springs and wet summers are part of the future?

Middle of winter here. Yesterday was 18oC and this (Sunday) morning, at 9.30, I saw a monarch butterfly being buffeted by the wind as it flew off.

Sorry Lesley, but you can feel sorry for me having to wait for Lucy to finish her violin lesson (from 11 - 12) sitting at a table outside the coffee shop next door to her music school with a long mocha (the 'o' pronounced as in hockey!!!) and ginger slice reading Peter Scott's autobiography "The Eye of the Wind".

Wow Anthony that's summer temperatures for us. You will be still in shorts and t.shirt. Brilliant.
We were nearly washed away yesterday.

What a life eh? I really DO feel sorry for you Anthony as you'll be going soft quickly. ;D Ginger slice is nice.

Were you a Peter Scott fan? I was brought up with two original paintings in the house. They belonged to my late brother Donald who died when I was just 13 and he was 21. (He had Duchenne's Syndrome). My sister has them now.

Yes. I grew up with Peter Scott and have several signed books, including the one I'm currently reading. I really enjoyed the "Faraway Look" programmes and have those books too. I met him in 1970 when he was guest of honour at the 10th anniversary gala day at Worldwide Butterflies in Sherborne, Dorset and visited Slimbridge in its early days. There was going to be a huge celebration of "Peter Scott at 80" (there's even a book of that title), but he died two weeks before his birthday in August 1989. I have a signed print, which is the nearest I'll get to owning a painting.

As a painter he's almost unknown here but of course his Pa was well connected to NZ, starting off from Christchurch, I think for the southward journey.

Yes, there is a statue of Captain R F Scott in Christchurch sculpted by his wife. There's also a memorial to the five who died on the return journey in a south window in the choir at Dunblane Cathedral. I've read several accounts of the attempt on The Pole. The unknown factor has worked in my favour. A signed copy of "Observations of Wildlife" is £200 in the UK. I got one for $20 here. ;D

Hopefully not Roma. I could do with some rain. Not just a splash but a few days of continuous rain. My raised beds are bone dry. I could however top up of my tan

98 degrees F (36.7 C) when I came through town 15 minutes ago. Can't remember when we last had rain. Sherba and I were rejoicing this morning because it's supposed to drop to 78 degrees next week. Air Conditioning OFF....Yesssssss!!!!!!!!!
I don't worry about greenhouse shading......don't even worry about a greenhouse. Could never cool it sufficiently in summer and it would cost a fortune to heat in winter. Oh for a Manchester summer again.

That shouldn't be difficult Alan. If what David says about the Devon weather is right, every time he has a pint there will be an inch of rain falling into it - if he has the wet weather gear to sit in, outside.

Notice the word "cool". I had a half litre (oh for a pint) of Guinness in a bar in Howick last weekend. It was chilled! Argggghhh! I have a bottled of "Black Sheep" for the weekend and it will not be going within a yard of the fridge!

Lesley was commenting on snow. Here's snow. The idiot on the van is supposed to be packing our worldly goods and loading them into a shipping container. The port authorities refused to release the containers so our stuff was loaded into several of these wee vans. Needless to say, several items, including our inadequately wrapped leather suite, were damaged due to rubbing up against the container sides! I would NOT recommend Anglopacific. They refuse to pay repair costs for my Aunt's barometer, which was damaged, because it wasn't listed! It was their job to list items. According to their list they didn't pack any photo albums either, yet 22 were shipped! ::) How our piano arrived unscathed I don't know, because it left our house late on a Friday night unwrapped, yet they had promised to build a wooden crate around it before it left the house! >:(

You're in the wrong city Anthony. Guinness down here is NEVER chilled, nor any of the imported beers which Roger frequently drinks, except of course Australians. I doubt if an American beer could be found in Dunedin.

This morning's snow was gone by 9am but I see a good thick coating on the back hills, Lammerlaws and Lammermoors.

I see that the summer we didn't have has now turned into autumn with howling gales and heavy rain over the last two days (and I've lost my first fence panel of the year!). A "window" today with just wind and little rain, with another onslaught due on Thursday.

My Begonia hanging baskets were looking good till we got that gale yesterday. This year I can count on one hand the amount of times I could sit at my pond a watch my fish, half the time I just had to throw the fishfood in and leave. Well I have solved the problem, well two problems really. I wont have to worry about the heron eating my fish and now I have somewhere dry and wind free. Only one big problem I had to move my plunge beds.

Hi Graham, there are bubbles I just had them turned off. My husband said if the fish die he will use it for dipping in. He will have to heat the water first.

David I had to catch the fish from the other pond, can't understand the enjoyment of standing in water and trying to catch a fish. My husband said that I would never catch the fish, well I had to prove him wrong. Two hours later the koi was caught. Give me weeding or potting up anyday. I don't think fishing will ever be for me.

I went down to the sea front this afternoon to see what birds had been blown in by the gale.  I reckon the wind was force 8/9 but this is not unusual here in Autumn and Winter.  The waves were quite impressive when they hit the seawall, sending up walls of spray 8 metres high.  Back home now at 1700, the wind has turned more westerly and the tops of the trees are bending with the wind.  I hope that this is as bad as it gets.

Now need to get the plants ready for the cold nights that are just around the corner.
