Hi, folks! Finally logged back on to this forum and oohed and aaaahhed my way thru my favorite thread -- http://www.srgc.org.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3584.0 -- only to find it end abruptly in 2010. After some searching, I have now found you again and look forward to viewing more marvelous photos/drawings/images.
Thanks for sharing.
Here's my next contribution to the "arty kind" ...
-
Welcome back Lois. We missed you. We all tried to stay 'arty' while you took your sabbatical, but it wasn't easy ... some of us lapsed and became chroniclers, authors or nuisances at the shows. :D :-*

or all 3 in some cases, Cliff? ;D

Well, then, I guess I'll have to put up more arty photos!
You know, I am REALLY back on this forum because Maggie Young sent me a birthday card this year. What a surprise that was!
I've been mostly offline for several years since my Mom lost much of her vision in 2009. She has come back to California (from Oregon where she and Dad had re-retired 15 years ago and Dad died in 2007) and she has lived 3 different places here. She is (finally) settled into an assisted living residence in a nearby town. I still have to do all her reading, writing, finances, computer research, errands, and driving her around; but she now has her own room, a button to push that brings help, and 3 meals a day. She's 96 and mostly doing well, except for the vision thing; although she has twice scared us with trips to the ER. Mostly I just get stressed out with worrying about her and trying to help her. My husband is wonderfully supportive.
Sorry about that long family history. I just want you-all to understand that I may be away for weeks at a time, but I really REALLY like visiting here -- and I'll be back!!
So ...
Now let me look in my magic bag and find some more arty flowers ...
... ah. Here's a cactus for you.
-
Welcome back, Lois. Little stress here now that Maggi is on regular doses of chocolate. :D

A giant crop circle in the snow?
I have a friend here in California who "paints" on the playa (wet intertidal beach sand). You can see his work at:
http://www.andresamadorarts.com/2011/07/discovery-channel.html
-
I was sure it was embroidery.... until I followed the link.
Lois' description of a "crop circle in the snow" is terrific.... I never saw this type of work before.... it is just like crop circles .. but tougher to do, I suppose, and certainly beautifu... and a lot of fun, too.
-
It looks like the work of M. C. Escher. A dutch artist, who made very complex drawings.
In The Hague you can visit The Escher House.

The embroidery looks great!

Here's an image I made many years ago -- before all those filters became common in PhotoShop -- in a style I called "LineArt". It started life as a photo of a red rose, and then I messed with it. (Unfortunately, I no longer have the original image to compare it to.) Hope you like this!
PS-- I started a thread called "Lois: What's it like in California?" at http://www.srgc.org.uk/forum/index.php?topic=8938.0
Hope you come and visit!

A couple of months ago I saw a news clip about an exhibition by David Hockney in which he had created images using his iPad and an App callled Art Studio.
So I downloaded the app and after a few minutes doodling around with the various brushes etc. I created the image below.
I have found it much more difficult to create anything else but will keep trying. Perhaps thinking too much and trying to create something more perfect now and not just letting it happen.
-
I love it, Graham. Ian has recently bought an i-pad and is having a wonderful time "painting" on it.
Fantastic what you can do with these apps.
-
Thanks Maggi.
My art is usually very detailed and I find it difficult to be 'free'. The iPad app allows for detailed art but it takes some getting used to.

Then perhaps you need to try a little more to be free..... change is as good.... and all that..... ;)... and you were just saying in another thread that your garden is too tidy.... perhaps you need to have a go at making your art less "tidy" too ( have I told you about my previous existence as an art reviewer? )

Out of comfort zone :-\ I've tried but get frustrated when it doesn't go right. Perhaps the 'back' button on the iPad will help. Mistakes can easily be deleted!
Do you critique Ian's work? :)
-
Graham, I'm a woman... I critique everything from everybody.... :) ;D

Like the spare tyre cover sometimes seen in NZ and perhaps elsewhere. It says "If a man speaks in the forest and there is no woman there to hear him, is he still wrong?" I saw one at the weekend where someone had added, in chalk "Of course." ;D

Here's a stained glass window I made recently for the house. (First attempt and probably my last, as it took so long)

Worth every hour of work, Kevin. Very stylish!

I hope it's not your last Kevin, it is quite lovely. :)

There's definitely an artist behind all that butter and lard. A lovely image, Cliff.

Fat chance I'll take that as a compliment, Anne!!! LOL. Many thanks.

No wonder you were bowled over, Rogan ... a stunning vista.

Roma's quote is from the poem, 'Tam o' Shanter' by Robert Burns - some of his most evocative writing- do please research it if you do not know it.

Well, anyone who writes a poem about haggis....................... ;D

That's is more than a poem, David, that is a paean of praise to a magical dish............ :)
(magical in the sense that it must have taken a wizard to dream up the recipe!)

I think I've got the reason why the Scottish football team (if such is the word!!) can't win anything. It's all down to dubious offel, bashed neeps and champit tatties :P ;D
Nice pictures Mr B.

Yeah true.... so many wizards reputedly ARE deranged and dangerous. Anyone who can come up with cooking methods involving wrapping in animal stomachs has some sorts of issues I'm sure. :P Or was it psychedelic mushrooms that inspired? ;D ;D
I know, I know.... I'm going to be drummed out of the society for that...... or should that be piped out? :-\
OK, I'm going now.......

Did that great poet, McGonagall, ever celebrate the haggis?

If he had Gerry, would we have understood?
OK I know, this is scraping the barrel (after the ad)

Shouldn't that be "a study OF Felix domesticus"? ;D 'Cause ifa cat is taking the picture as well, then that is REALLY impressive and artistic. ;)
Sorry, couldn't resist. :P
