After years of not doing much more than a few flower stems a year my Pteridophyllum racemosum is going crazy. I did really well last year but I cant remember how many stems it had.
This year there are just under 40 noses.
I guess it's happy now.

It must be SUPERBLY happy to have so many new growths, yet it looks as if it's in full sun? Pity you can't transport some of those south. :D
-
Lesley it grows in almost full shade. I had to flash it. The trough it grows in gets sun from dawn to 10am at the height of summer.
-
I bet it'll look fantastic in full flower? 8)
-
Last year the flowers were quite poor because, I think, of the lack of rain and unusual high temperatures
-
It will be a grand sight Mark. Of course you'll have the camera poised and ready to go. :)
-
Definitely

Very nice plant 8). Mark you are going to have a lovely show there, you must post a picture when in flower. I was just going to google it to see what it looked like and then Trond kindly showed us a picture. I think I will treat myself to this. I think I have seen it on PC catalogue.

Angie, I think Ian Christie may have the plant, try asking him :)
-
Thanks Maggi. I am hoping to go down next Thursday to Ian's with Helen & Bill. Also hoping to pick up some fine bark.
Angie :)

Glad to hear you have had luck with the roxburghii seed ;)

This was my plant last April

Very nice Mark. Something worth having for sure.

I hope my plants look something like this in 10 years or so ;) Not to speak of your 40-noser :o

How old is your plant Mark ?
-
The trough was planted in May 2006
-
Have you found that the the just emerging leaf shoots broken off will root ?
Rimmer
-
Never heard of that. Have you tried?
-
only one rubbish flower stem - so far.
Maybe this plant is tired. When can I lift it and freshen the mix underneath?
-
Mark, is your plant in a trough? Surely that would be too small a habitat for it? It looks as if it would enjoy a good chunk of woodland. Or is it just a small piece you have taken and put into a new trough? No I now read that it was put there in 2006. So perhaps tired or perhaps just so confined that it's putting everything into staying alive and not into flowering. Like keeping a large dog confined in a biscuit tin. :o
In fact I find it just about impossible to believe that the pictures that started this topic are the same plant in your two trough pictures or that it could grow to that first size in so small a place. If it were not for the trillium flower as well, I WOULDN'T believe it.
-
Yes Lesley it grew so big since I planted it as a single nosed plant.
Only one flower stem :'( :'( :'( :'(
I'll have to get it out but when?
-
Thats so disapointing Mark. I managed to get a plant from Ian Christie so hopefully I will get it to flower next year.
Angie :)

ASAP, or before the summer anyway. You may have to lift everything from the trough and start again with the other things, finding a suitable open garden space for the Pteridophyllum. It will likely come out in a single, congested mat. You can probably cut it into several pieces.

So beautiful plant Mark! It's beautiful even with one flower stem only. It looks like a blooming fern. :)
