NAPS Newbottle Auricula Show
« on: May 12, 2013, 08:59:52 PM »
As it was too far to go to Malvern from Sunderland on Saturday, instead I got on our local bus and travelled 2 miles to Newbottle Workingmen's Club for the Auricula show run by the National Auricula and Primula Society. The light was not very good in the Club room, so some of the pictures could be better, but I thought there might be those interested. Those of us used to Alpine shows had to get used to the different concerns of judges - I had to ask one of the judges what they were looking for. Most of these pictures are of plants that won their classes.

I spent a long time trying to read the label for the variety name for the Yellow Self Auricula, only to discover that what the label said was Lost Label!

Yellow self Auricula
Red self Auricula Scorcher
Blue self Auricula Oakes Blue
Dark Self Auricula Lady Zoe

There was a class for Asiatic Primulas, won by a Primula sieboldii,
and for European Primulas, won by a Primula scotica, but what caught my attention was a very different take on Primula pubescens from what we are used to.

I have fond memories of Newbottle. One of our curates moved there as Vicar in the mid 60's and I spent several happy weekends in the Vicarage.

Glad to seen NAPS is still thriving and keeping the old Florist ideals alive.

Excellent pictures. I'm struggling to capture them to show them at their best.
Looks like a nice gathering.

Peter thanks for posting photos of the show. These shows are part of the living thread with our cultural and social (and gardening) history and long may they continue.
Yemen, what a country ... Haraz mountains, Socotra, Sana'a, Hadramaut, the empty quarter.... a country of stunning, mind altering beauty...and the friendliest of people.
