Bit odd in some ways, as I am positive I took the seed from I innominata and one of the other plants which is flowering is definitely of the innominata persuasion.
When I planted the seedlings in the Veg garden to grow on I labelled them Iris sp. as I was rather hoping that they were hybrids of I. innominata and the nearby Pacific Coast hybrid, Never mind.

I think you are on the right track, Palustris.  Species Iris setosa, at least in North America, have much shorter standards and much wider falls.  These are grown from seed collected in the Kenai, Alaska and about 500 kilometers to the south east.

Thank-you Rick, sorry for the delay in replying, missed your posting. So you think this one IS a form of Pacific coast hybrid then, rather than I. setosa (I think we have the form which used to be passed around as I.s. dwarf form, ?canadensis).

I don't know enough to say, and I really don't know anything about Pacific Coast iris.

But I am expressing my doubts that it could be a straight species Iris setosa.
Perhaps a hybrid.

Another one has opened and it is a much darker purple, though the same shape as this one. The photo does not really show how dark it is.

Thanks any way. It does not really matter as they are for us not for sale or exchange or anything.

I'm not sure that the first iris shown here IS setosa, because of that very thing that Rick mentions, the much shorter (almost bristle-like) standards. In your picture Palustris, the standards are very obvious and even prominent, at an angle of perhaps 45 degrees. But I couldn't give a reasonable alternative. The foliage does not say to me, "Pacific Coast iris, and in fact I. innominata has quite fine, very tough foliage, not as wide or as bright green as yours. My first thought is something from the laevigata/virginica/versicolor group but coming from very dry gardens I haven't grown these much so could be way out. But I'm pretty sure it isn't setosa as such. Setosa can hybridize with some from the sibirica group. Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse the issue. :-[

If your second picture is from the same batch of seed, then yes, certainly hybrids. Anyway, in my opinion, any iris is a good iris. ;D

Thank-you. As you say, any iris is ok by me.
I have innominata and I agree the leaves and to a certain extent the growth habit is different.
It really only matters if I was going to sell the plants, but they will just be taken from the Veg patch and spread around the garden.
