poppy seedling
« on: June 28, 2013, 12:49:10 PM »
Last year a perennial poppy arrived in one of my troughs. It has small grey hairy leaves with tall wiry stems topped with bright orange flowers.

This year a seedling has appeared in my new raised bed. Its identical to the other except it has varying numbers of extra petals. Do you know what it is?

All part of the variation you can see in Papaver rupifragum, I reckon.

Also gives the appearance of what I used to grow as Papaver atlanticum and P.a. 'Flore Pleno'. It's a desirable little thing in any event....

Good point , Carlo.

While the Kew list  gives these  two as distinct species, I see that GRIN calls them synonymous
http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?408100   - another point of confusion that I'm not going to stress over!  ;)

Strange in a way, we have three Orange poppies like that, one single with green leaves, one double with green leaves and the third is single with grey green almost leathery leaves. The book says they are all P rupifragum, but they are very very different, leaf-wise.
Our P rupifragum came from Bob Brown who is usually accurate with names. Strangely too, while the others are real seed weeds, the true species(?) has only ever produced one seedling in 12 years.

Went to do the same today on ours so one can compare and SWIAR has cut them all down to stop them seeding all over the place.  Will have to wait until they regrow.

It looks very much like my Papaver atlanticum. I have a poppy book at home so I can have a look when I get home and compare the descriptions of both rupifragum and atlanticum.

Picture of the leaves of the different(?) poppies we have

The soi dit P rupifragum on the left and soi dit P. atlanticum on the right. Not only look different but the texture is also different.
