Suggestions for trip to Czech Republic, Hungary and Berlin
« on: January 26, 2014, 02:03:37 AM »
My husband and I are in the early stages of planning a trip to the Czech Republic, Hungary and possibly Berlin.  Can anyone suggest any gardens I should visit?  Like most NARGS members I'm pretty much a plantaholic so perennial gardens and woodland gardens are also fair game.  I'm not much of a tree person so I don't have much interest in arboretums unless they have a lot of interesting understory plants.
My husband isn't much interested in gardening so I probably won't be able to devote more than a couple of days to garden visits  :-[  I'd like to make them really count.  This trip is planned for early June.
I will be cross posting this message on the NARGS forum.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I'll make sure that our Czech, Berlin and Hungarian members get your message , Jan - I hope they'll be able to help with your trip - which I am sure will be  great fun.

Jan,

You will get lots of good advice about gardens, both private and botanical ones, so I will just mention an area where we spent several weeks in the latter part of May this spring.

We stayed in Mikulov, in the south of the Czech Republic, very close to the Austrian border.  Every day we took a bus to a different area and walked a lot - to stately homes and gardens, nature reserves with lots of birds and wildflowers, and interesting village front gardens.

It is very popular for cycling.

Irm in Berlin says :

Hi,

near Berlin is the sunken garden Foerster (Senkgarten),
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl-Foerster-Garten_%28Bornim%29
which is highly recommended.

Nearby is the castle "Schloss Sanssouci" and the park and Botanic Garden. Its in Potsdam near Berlin.

Directly in Berlin-Marzan, there are the "Gärten der Welt"
http://www.gruen-berlin.de/parks-gaerten/gaerten-der-welt/
also very nice to look at.

:-)
