Which Daphne please?
« on: May 30, 2013, 08:40:49 PM »

Can anyone identify this Daphne for me please?  I've had it about 25 years.  Its 1200mm tall and the same wide and is scented.
Many thanks.

Daphne pontica with that shiny foliage and spikey  twin flowers, I think.

Probably Daphne pontica   (or D. albowiana).
They are very similar, only the leaves are a little bit different.
But the fruits of D. albowiana are red and those of D. pontica are blue-black.

Isn't it the other way round, Jef?   :-\

Thank you Cliff, Maggi and Jozef. It's marvellous to get such a response so quickly. Afraid I've not noticed the colour of the berries. As with so many of my plants, I suspect it is growing in less than ideal conditions rather close to a willow and does not flower as profusely as the pontica that come up on a google image search. None the less I am very fond of it.

Bought this lost label Daphne from Blackthorn Nursery years ago. Flowers now, has small dull green leaves. Any ideas please!

Looks like it may be deciduous rather than evergreen? In which case D. caucasica ?

Yes, very likely. Quite a lax shrub to around 1m. high/wide?

Sounds right, Ralph. Open habit, semi-evergreen in places, yellow berries
