Overcast but dry here, warmish, managed to find time to remove diseased bits from the hellebores - dratted fungus!

We had a lovely day on Monday 28th April -  very warm and sunny - one could really believe that Spring was moving to early summer - since then it has been cold wet and overcast, if not downright foggy - yuck! The forecast is for some very nasty frosts in the next few days which may do a lot of damage  - how nice then, to get these cheery photos of his blossoming spring flowers in Michigan from Rimmer de Vries to lift our spirits.  Thanks  Rimmer!

I asked Rimmer what the tulip was - he says  :
"The Tulip is 'Silver Standard' a hybrid ca 1760.  If it is virused it survives quite well, I have had a patch of these for 10 years in my mud. "

Frost in May. I know that we are liable to frost in almost any month of the year but we must have been struck by it on Thursday night. We first noticed that an Arisaema griffithii in a pot on the patio was wilted and couldn't understand why; compost moist and no beasties when we (unfortunately) unpotted it. Away from home all day Saturday but I have just had a look round the garden on Sunday morning and noticed two more griffithii in the ground in the same condition and tea-bagging of the rhodos. Also, an Acer dissectum in a position that gets morning sun is also frosted. Ah well, they will grow again nest year and it was a nice warm day after the overnight frost.

I had a journey to Middle-Earth. Weather was clear blue skies and warm. Hobbiton is well worth a visit. Curiously, in a wild part of the grassed area I spotted Leucojum aestivum in flower. Very early! I was treated to a complimentary ale and bought a piece of pork pie in the Green Dragon pub. The gardens are all well maintained and the vegetables are used in the food prepared. This tourist attraction owes its existence to the weather. New Line were contracted to destroy all set locations after filming of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, but bad weather prevented them from getting to Hobbiton with any machinery, so the set remained. The locals became curious and asked to go and visit the set. That is when the sheep farmer who owned the land asked to make it into a tourist attraction. For "The Hobbit" the buildings were made of more permanent material, and the Green Dragon is a pub with bar, food and log fire. The Hobbit holes are still just doors with not much behind, but seeing smoke coming out of the chimneys makes it look real. Even the mill wheel turns. Bilbo's oak tree is an aluminium replica of the first tree, which was a real oak sawn down and reassembled and then some poor student asked to stick a gazillian fake leaves onto it. They even had a frog catcher to remove frogs which were making too much noise in the small pond, and a chap had to walk from each hobbit hole twice each day for weeks to hang and collect washing to ensure well worn paths in the grass!

Visited a friend's garden today in the company of another two friends.  We got round the garden dry but there was a heavy shower when we were having tea and cake.  This rainbow appeared when we were about to leave for home.

Roma thats lovely. I never have my camera with me and miss out on these things, saying this I do have my phone  . Just wandering how my Cypripediums are we have just having thunder and hailstones . Oh well, what can you do.
