Duthie Park, Aberdeen
« on: May 31, 2014, 08:08:46 PM »
I spent most of the day two Saturdays ago at the Duthie Park when we had our local Rock Garden Club display.   I had plenty time to wander round the park and greenhouses.   The area which I found most interesting is one of the courtyards between the greenhouses.  This area was planted in memory of the late David Welch who was Director of Parks and Gardens from 1967 to 1989.
Apart from a euphorbia there was not a single plant in flower yet I found it the most interesting part of the Park because of the different colours and textures of foliage.

Another larger courtyard is filled with raised beds with mainly shrubs in the surrounding beds.  Till someone brought me a fallen flower and asked me the name I had not noticed the Paulownia flowering in the corner.  It is a large tree and looks quite healthy unlike the miserable specimen which used to be at the Cruickshank Garden.  I do not know if it flowers regularly but the warm summer we had last year must have helped.

Crinodendron hookerianum has plenty buds and the new foliage is well advanced
There are a number of plants associated with Aberdeens in other parts of the world
Rhododendron macrophyllum
Viola labradorica

Hi Roma

I thought the Winter Gardens was looking really good. Loved that Paulownia tree, I couldn't believe that it would flower in Aberdeen.
Nice pictures  8)

That is certainly a lovely foliage area - and the rest is nice too!
