Liverwort ID please
« on: June 05, 2015, 12:42:03 PM »
Three Liverworts I have encountered lately, I'd appreciate views on identification please

I acquired another specimen of Marchantia polymorpha today from the local nursery I get my sphagnum moss peat from. I love the expression in their eyes when you permission to appropriate some. It's a sort of " Oh Gz! Where did I leave the taser and straitjacket". I did compliment them on growing such cracking Liverworts too.

No.1 Growing on rock in river, it' has warts
No.2 Growing on rock in river, no warts
No.3 Growing under a dripping drainage pipe on stone, very wet  It's a hang upside down over the river and hope you don't start slipping kind of photo.

The scale is mm

Nos 1 and 2 look like Pellia species, Fred. Most likely are P. epiphilla and P. endiviifolia, but you would need to see reproductive parts to be sure.

Thank you Chris, it concurs with my novice ID. That's encouraging.

The Marchantia specimen I obtained from the nursery had both male and female parts. Unlike others |I have from different location which have either male or female parts and (cover your ears ladies) the male bits are very much larger than the others. I think the old army expression used to be 'excused shorts'.
