Who can recognise bulbs?
« on: October 30, 2013, 10:15:42 AM »
I found this buld by the roadside on Crete last week.
It had a couple of white, very brittle, tunics which fell apart as soon as they were disturbed.
I cannot imagine what it might be.

Ooops!
I should have said it is about three centimetres diameter.

Allium subhirsutum is quite common on Cretan roadsides but 3cm seems a bit big for this.

Using my abnormally powerful identification faculties I reckon it's a fig. Cut it up and put it on your corn flakes John ::) ;D

Cheers David,
Right colour I suppose - but the dead roots tend to contradict! :P

Bulb has finally flowered.
It is an Allium, stands 4'tall and appears to be A.amethystinum.
