Arctic Summerflowers in Longyearbyen/Svalbard
« on: August 15, 2018, 02:47:21 PM »
With the Albatros we had in Juni 2018 a "Great Nordland Cruise" from Bremerhaven, Iceland, Svalbard and over Norway back to Germany. In all lands we visited great natural sights. I was especially surprised about the flowering arctic plants, I found in all lands. Here I start with the flowers of Longyearbyen in Svalbard, I fotographed during our visit in 22.6.2018 in one of the six yearly sunny days!

Foto 1: The airport of Longyearbyen in the Adventsfjord under blue sky
Foto 2: The mainstreet of Longyearbyen with shops, cafes, hotels and the Svalbard-Museum
Foto 3: White flowers of Papaver dahlianum - Svalbard-Poppy  near the street
Foto 4: Cardaminopsis petrea - Polar-Cress between the stones
Foto 5: Oxyria digyna - Mountain Sorrel with red flowerbuds

Hallo David, my wife, six other friends and I had a wonderful cruise from Iceland, Svalbard to Norway this juni. I was very surprised about the bright colours of the different arctic flowers, which we saw in masses! The fotos fom Iceland and Norway comes soon.
Here in Germany we are planning for the next 9. and 10. march 2019 here in Torgau/Saxonia the first springflower-exposition in connection with the 9.Saxonia Garden Show LAGA 2022 Torgau, see foto!

Thanks as well for posting Harald-Alex. It is with great pleasure that I always admire places that I've never visited and new plant species.
Some of the circumpolar species are common to the northern North America :) but it's interesting to see them growing in other associations.

Thank You, Gabriela, for Your interest for my fotoserie of Svalbard-Flora, we  found during a Nordland-Cruise this juni. Next days comes the fotos of flowers of Iceland and Nordkap/Norway, I was very surprised about the masses of flowers in this North-Territories.
At home in Germany I collect snowdrops in my Snowdrop-Garden.

Thanks for sharing these photos Harald-Alex.  I look forward to the rest 8)
Flora of Svalbard lists 5 yellow drabas; the flowers look like D. corymbosa but it's hard to see how hairy the leaves are.

Thank You, Ashley, for Your comment, it is very interesting to see, how many different varieties live in Svalbard, one of the northernest territories of Europe with short, but intensive summers! I think also, the unknown yellow flower is Draba corybosa, thank You for the help!
Greetings from Germany (where the hot and dry summer never ends! We wait since april for rain!)
