Help for the people of Nepal after earthquake
« on: May 18, 2015, 05:34:04 PM »
Nurseryman Rob Potterton plans to undertake a project to raise money to help the victims of the Nepal earthquakes.

I think that because of the number of plants we grow from this  beautiful but now devastated area, many of us are especially sympathetic to the plight of the Nepalis and may welcome the chance to support such projects as this.

"Robs Everest Challenge"

Rob is  planning to walk the Viking Way, a 147 mile footpath,  for The Himalayan Trust UK  to raise funds for the people of Nepal

He writes :
In August I am going to be walking the 147 mile long Viking Way from Oakham in Rutland to the Humber Bridge which seems like a great way to help raise money for the people of Nepal following the recent devastating earthquake. Please give a little if you can. Thank you. "

Donations to Rob  may be made HERE

In this thread, there was also comment about Nepal from David and Stella, who have helped Nepalese friends in the past  ( this was before the second big quake )
News of Nepal
We have now heard from our friends and all of them are alive, although they have lost friends, family and homes.

There is an update on our website homepage under the heading 'News' on the right hand side."

I know that  Kevock, in the same was as is being  planned by Chris Chadwell, will be making whatever efforts they can to assist with  aid  work and help to rebuild in Nepal.
see Chris' ideas to help  here  http://www.chadwellseeds.co.uk/nepal-earthquakes-2015

I hope that readers of the forum will consider supporting Rob  by donating  or  seek out any aid organisation they  personally favour to make their contribution to help the people of Nepal in the wake of this disaster.

We donated to Tim Costello of World Vision in Australia who quoted on the radio "The Nepalese people need heaps of bags of cement as they can reuse the bricks they already have" Which I thought was a wonderful practical idea.

Kenneth Cox and Glendoick Garden Centre are making
 their appeal too :

The Nepal Earthquake:

The death toll in the massive earthquake which struck Nepal on Saturday 25th April has passed 6,000, and many thousands are still unaccounted for. Thousands of villages have been devastated, with up to 90% of clinics and schools in some districts rendered unusable.

Lalugiras or Rhododendron is the National Flower of Nepal and many Nepalese species and hybrids bred from these species are widely grown in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

Glendoick Gardening Centre has donated 100 rhododendrons and azaleas to the appeal which you’ll find at the garden centre. Buy one and Glendoick will give 100% of the selling price to the Nepal Earthquake appeal.

Choose from Deciduous azaleas Luteum (scented yellow) or Homebush (double pink), Rhododendron thomsonii (Nepalese species with red flowers) and R. davidsonianum (purple-pink flowers)

Prompted by the arrival of a super catalogue from Potterton's Nursery today I remembered that I had not yet made a donation to Rob's challenge. Have done so now !
It's a good cause - as Rob says, "The people of Nepal have supported our country for 100's of years; if we all give a little now, it will help so many people."

He has even been joined for the first few days' walking by his Mum - Jean is 83 but has been matching Rob, stride for stride across the country to keep him company on this  fund raising  venture for the people of Nepal - please support them!

Everything went very well for Rob on his sponsored walk - the blisters didn't get him down!  Various friends and family joined him from time to time to keep him company - though none so remarkable as his dear Mum, who walked with him for the first few days.
A super achievement for Rob to accomplish this to raise - as we now hear - well over the target amount -

From Rob Potterton: "Amazingly we have now received your donations well in excess of target, currently standing at £1226, overwhelmed by the support, thank you so much "

Wonderful news Rob, well done !!  8) 8)
