Event in St Andrews - via "the Caley"
« on: July 31, 2015, 06:29:36 PM »
The Caley, as the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society is affectionately known, is involved with an event at St Andrews on 28th August.

Scottish Horticultural Conference
Fri 28th August 2015  (10am – 4pm)
St Andrews University, St Andrews, Fife
Celebrating Horticulture in Scotland

"What an amazing yet shameful fact that, athough there have been events both annual and historic such as Gardening Scotland, The Glasgow Garden Festival (1988) and many topic specific talks and seminars, there has never been a national horticultural conference in Scotland focusing on Scotland.

The Caley (The Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society) has been supporting green fingered endeavours within Scotland for over 200 years and this year one of its aims is to celebrate an industry that barely gets a mention within contemporary Scottish rhetoric and lobbying platforms.

The key speakers for the conference are David Knott, the Curator of Living Collections for the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and Ken Cox. They will be joined by George Anderson, Honorary President of The Caley. These three are celebrated horticulturists within Scotland in terms of plantsmanship, plant breeding and education respectively and we are honoured to have them join us.

In the early 1800s, when The Caley was established, Scotland already had a highly regarded horticultural reputation – not least as a great number of head gardeners for the nobility and gentry in England were Scottish. Scottish gardeners were seen as being hardworking, hardy and accustomed to variable and unsettled weather! From the start a key focus of the Society was to share skills and knowledge, a focus that continues to this day, but even in those early days there was a concern that agriculture had a disproportionately higher profile than that of horticulture.
The Caley’s ambition is to more proactively represent all of Scottish Horticulture in its many forms, amalgamating and focusing people’s minds in order for them to have a sense of community and understanding that they belong under one umbrella, thus creating a national voice for Scottish Horticulture.
Each year The Caley recognises the achievement of gardeners and horticulturalists from across Scotland. The aim of this conference will be to celebrate horticulture in Scotland and nurture a strong future together.

Our priority will always be to support horticulture and gardening across Scotland. We are proud to be Scottish and look forward to seeing you in St. Andrews."
