Petunias
« on: September 01, 2015, 09:09:39 PM »
Here are pics of Petunia axillaris grown from seed sown January. I didnt realise when I chose the seed that it's an annual.  The six plants grew and grew and have been amazing. The evening scent is wonderful but it also attracts bees and hover flies galore so a lot of seed is being made and I'll be putting it into seed exchanges because it may be an annual but it's super....

What toppers, Christine!  Very showy indeed.  (I've  set the pix the right way up!)

Visited the wonderful gardens and greenhouses at two colleges in Western Massachusetts, Smith College and UMass Amherst. At UMass (University of Massachusetts Amherst), the were some display beds that I only had a brief chance to peruse, lots of new trials, couldn't linger as had my family in tow. Was taken by several Petunia hybrids, here is a sampling.

1 - 2   Petunia 'Picasso in Burgundy' - wow, love the green edge to the purple flowers.

3 - 4   Petunia 'Latte' - I'd grow this one in a heartbeat, hopefully I've captured the color properly, coffee-latte flowers with fine rich red-brown guidelines.

Another selection from trial display beds at UMass Amherst.

1 -  One of several mini-flowered petunias, which start approaching the newer Calibrachoa hybrids. Perky white with bright pink center vein and eye.  There were several colors here, only photographed this one, forgot to photograph the name tag.

2 - general view of the entrance to the UMass trials display garden, we did not have time for more than a cursory look, will return again.

3 - same mini Petunia growing up against Petunia 'Latte' in my post above, good for flower size comparison.

Pink one is cute for  being so little - Picasso in Burgundy is very showy - but I would happily grow a lot of Latte!
