Wasn't it one of the "ship wreck" lilies? The bulbs washed ashore (according to the mythology, could easily have been brought ashore the normal way) and taken by the locals to grow as "their own" - I've no idea how far Scarborough is from the coast though! I think the same story is told about Nerine sarniensis - "The Guernsey Lily"!
