Does anyone have a clue as to the identity of this fern - said to be from New Zealand?

I think your fern could be Phymatosorus diversifolius. The fronds are said to vary from simple to pinnatifid even on the same piece of rhizome. I did try to grow it outside once but it failed.

Well done, Olive, on being up to date with a more recent naming of
Microsorum pustulatum
in using
Phymatosorus diversifolius
- and Cliff for citing the article with all the details.
I must admit - ferns are almost a complete mystery to me!
