Identification help please
« on: October 23, 2016, 11:03:06 AM »
Hello, this is my first visit and I'm primarily a bird photographer - but I can't ignore the rest of nature when I'm out. I hope you might help identify these 5 images so I can catalogue them properly.

No 1 is the most distant and was taken in Cuba in February.

No 2 was in the Hecho valley in the Spanish Pyrenees in May.

No 3 was also in May as we crossed to the French side, it was at the Col du Pourtalet at about 1800 m amsl.

No 4 was in the same general area as 3 but a little lower.

No 5 was was on the east coast of Sicily again May.

I'm no botanist and I've learned in other forums that when I ask, "Is it A or B?" the answer is usually "C" so I'll say nothing except to ask if the blue ones are some sort of gentian? I'm grateful for any help you might offer.

David

The first one is Bletia purpurea, and I think  the second picture is of Anacamptis pyramidalis. The third and fourth photos look like Gentiana verna. The last one is a Silene, possibly Silene colorata.

Definitely Gentiana verna; and Silene of course - double check the species with Flora Iberica/ Flora of Aragon.

Thanks to you both for such swift replies. Now I know what to search on I can see what features lead to the identification - thanks again, I can tidy up my image collection now.
