We were very sad to hear at the weekend of the death of Dr Ian McNaughton, of Pencaitland.
Ian had been suffering poor health for some time and his eyesight was very bad, which was a great trial to him. He is survived by his wife of nearly sixty years, Beryl, and their wonderful children and grandchildren.

After his professional career a scientist and plant breeder working on and developing agricultural forage Brassica at the Scottish Plant Breeding Centre at Pentlandfield, Midlothian, Ian was very active in researching Meconopsis and breeding asiatic Gentians and he was successful in introducing several very floriferous cultivars which are clump forming and grow very well in containers. Ian wrote about these - including this article for the SRGC website.

Ian was awarded the Dr Patrick Neil Medal by the Caley (Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society) in 2006 for his considerable contributions to Scottish horticulture. Both Ian and Beryl have been very involved in both the SRGC and Caley over many years.
Members of the McNaughton "clan" are involved in the greatly respected nursery, MacPlants, who are famous for their quality plants and Gold Medal Awards at Gardening Scotland.

A service of remembrance will be held in Gifford on Friday 26th April at 11.30am followed by a reception in the village.
