AGS Bulletin/Alpine Gardener online?
« on: January 09, 2017, 07:12:10 PM »
Does anyone know if it's possible to see the AGS journal online? I have 2 DVDs which cover vols 1-23, but I'm trying to look up the PC award for Galanthus plicatus 'Yvonne' and it's in vol 77, page 496. I no longer have that issue, as I disposed of most of my back issues as they were taking too much room.

I believe that it  is not possible to see the AGS bulletins online, Anne.  I have a full run and will look out the article for you.

Galanthus plicatus Bieb. 'Yvonne' P.C
 Amaryllidaceae
Shown at Dunblane  on 1-02-2009 by Ian Christie.

This is a further selection from a naturalised colony at Brechin Castle,  probably established when a forebear of the present owners, Lord and Lady Dalhousie, sent back bulbs from the Crimea. A number of others have been selected and are being trialled with regard to constitution, adaptability, disease resistance, ability to multiply and distinctiveness. Many otherwise desirable snowdrops fall at one or other of these hurdles.
The exhibitor describes it as a very fine, short-stemmed (14cm tall as seen) example, with oblanceolate, deep green leaves measuring 15 x 2.2 cm at anthesis. The large, single flower has outer spreading segments around 27 x 16mm  while the inner ones, flared at their apexes, are 11 x 10mm and have 'a full green single mark (fading above the v-shaped notch, but resurgent around the middle and above) in the manner of some ladybirds'. The spathe, 4cm long and bent only towards thetip, terminates in a small, weak hood and the flower is carried on an unbent pedicel "

There does not appear to be a photo accompanying the report.

I cannot help thinking that it looks a good deal better in the second two pictures.  The petals look broader, spread wider and have more texture.  Perhaps that's the difference between a young bulb and bulbs that are fully mature?
Almost in Scotland.

".... the flower is carried on an unbent pedicel "

I wonder what this means?
Almost in Scotland.

Many thanks, Maggi. I got the PC description from the RHS too.
Galanthus plicatus ‘Yvonne’
PC*. E: Mr Ian Christie, Christie’s Nursery, Downfield, West Muir, Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland DD8 5LP on 21 February 2009. Bulbous perennial. Leaves large, deep green, 150 × 22mm, oblanceolate, much narrowed at the base, margins plicate almost to the apex, tipped with a small, pale hood. Stem straight to 140mm. Spathe to 40mm, bending only towards the
apex with a small, weak hook. Pedicel straight, upright to 45mm, flower held horizontally. Ovary 7 × 5mm, top- shaped. Flower single, solitary; outer segments long, spreading, 27 × 16mm, white; inner segments forming a
‘tube’, 11 × 10mm, becoming flared at the apex with an apical mark around the v-shaped notch, quickly fading
and then re-asserting itself around
the middle. Herbarium specimen (WSY0107449) in WSY. D: The Alpine Gardener 77: 496.

Here is one of my plants. I think it's a cracker.
