Campanula carpatha Alba
« on: January 28, 2017, 02:29:41 PM »
Today, when I was emailing with Graham Nicholls, we discussed Campanula carpatha Alba (not carpatica Alba). It seems to have disappeared. Is there anyone who still has this plant?

I would be happy to send something in return, like morettiana, myrtifolia or zoysii.

Hello Martijn. I've got a five year old plant of which there is a photo taken by Ian Instone on the AGS disccussion page, Pershore show 2016. It's the back plant in a 19cm 3 pan Campanulaceae class although I repotted it shortly afterwards and it has romped away. I rooted one cutting last year which is my only other plant. The bad news therefore is that I don't really have a spare at the moment, the good news is that it is still around so I could send you some unrooted cuttings in the summer. I shall also take cuttings so if yours were to fail I could hopefully let you have a plant later in the year if we can work out the logistics.

Hello Martijn.   Some years ago Graham Nicholls gave us seed of carpatha Alba and we propagate it most years from seed.  I think Graham's original plant came from Robin White.  We find about 90% are pure white when they flower, with a few having a hint of very pale blue.  I have rooted cuttings but it's difficult to find much cutting material as they are so free flowering.  They grow quite quickly from seed but we find they are prone to rotting if they get too wet.  We have a few spare plants at the moment so if you would like to take a chance on getting a white one
email me.

What a kind and generous reacties from both of you! From Graham I heard that there are different forms around and I would like to try them.
Dot, I will send you an email!

Paul, I would be very happy with a cutting! I noticed that you also showed some fine Dionysia's:I could send you something from my collection. We will keep in contact!

Hello Martijn. Yes there are certainly two forms. Graham actually got his first plant of the 'original' form from me in 2005. I had previously received it at the final Cheltenham show in 2002 from Martin Sheader. He lives very close to Robin White (I live close to Dot and Graham) so his plant may also have come from Robin.
I've never had seed on this plant so I think it is not the same form as Dot's. The other supposed difference is that as the flowers go over on my form they have a very pale lilac tinge just at the base of the corolla tube.Other than that it is a good clear white. Despite it's reputation for being prone to autumn and winter wet, my plant is kept in an outside frame with easily removable covers as I don't have room for such a big plant in a greenhouse because the Dionysias take priority. It does get the odd bit of botrytis but I have always been able to keep on top of this by regular monitoring. I would be interested to find out whether you have any Dionysias which I don't have although the possibility of a Campanula morettiana is also tempting as I have lost it at the moment but have just sowed some seed. I'll send my e-mail address to your nursery website ready for the summer.
