AGS South Wales Show

Were it not for the AGS normal 'star burst cluster' of publicity the rest of the world might have continued in full ignorance of the fact that the first AGS Show of the season was held at Caerleon, Nr. Newport, today. Not even a mention of it on the AGS Site, apart from in the full show schedule of dates and venues for the season.

Happily I have some photos from Rob Potterton, including a lovely set of Jon Evans' rather excellent photographic display, which I hope  to get loaded  soon. It looks to have been a very nice show.

It's on the home page under what's new and links to the list of nurseries attending....you just have to look! And judging from the number of plants on display and the number of people in attendance the publicity, both nationally and locally, seems to have worked.

thanks for posting some of the pictures - cannot wait for Loughborough now as that will be the first show of the year for me.

One thing I did think last night when I was looking at the SRGC show pictures was how nice it was to see plants on a decent table cover rather than just plastic sheeting like the AGS does.   It makes such a difference when you photograph the plants

Obviously a question of aesthetics. The AGS tables are covered in unintrusive green cloth although these are covered in secondary plastic sheets which protects the cloth as some over zealous exhibitors overwater their plants. Makes it easier for the show helpers.

This fine pot of Colchicum hungaricum won the Farrer Medal for Jim McGregor at the AGS show in Wales yesterday.

I love the reports and photos of the shows. I especially like the fact that so many older people engage themselves in the shows. And when I see what great plants you can admire and buy. Enviable.
I think I will emigrate.

Quoting Jon Evans on the exhibit of  Colchicum and other Autumn-flowering Bulbs :

" This consisted of over 250 prints in 17 panels, two thirds of which have never been shown at an AGS show before.  The exhibit was put together at the request of the Joint Rock Garden Committee for the RHS Colchicum day at Hyde Hall last September, and I would like to thank the RHS for funding my printing and mounting material costs; without their support I would not have been able to produce these new images.

I added 8 pages of cultivation notes for public interest, but I am glad the judges recognised the educational content provided by assembling for comparison images of so many different species and cultivars in the genera Colchicum, Crocus, Cyclamen and others.  Part of the purpose of presenting the display at Caerleon was that it is so far from any of the autumn shows, so the show plants displayed would be unfamiliar to many visitors.

Bringing, putting up and taking down my display all went without a hitch thanks entirely to my wife Helen, who spent two hours putting up the boards and prints with me in the morning, and then most of another hour helping me take stuff down and packing it up before we left.  Without her, I couldn't have done it.  In between, I gather she went to help at the tea and refreshments counter."
