Iris variegata

What kind of soil does it need?
I lost mine this winter and so did a friend
May be too wet?It was growing in ordinary good garden soil

I thought  it  liked  wet soil?  With some  chalk?  Might  it  have  had  its  roots eaten by  vine  weevil grubs? They seem to like  Iris.

I grow my different variegatas in a sonny and rather dry place in a gritty soil mixture. Just like my pumilas, reichenbachii…..

Many years ago we saw Iris variegata flowering in vineyards by Lake Balaton in Hungary.
They grew there in full sun on dry soil.

Iris variegata and its forms are usually easily grown; a good, free-draining garden soil with a little added lime, in full sun should suit it perfectly.  I grow mine in pots, in a gritty compost, and left out all winter and have had no problems.   Perhaps you were just unlucky with a particularly delicate clone!
