x kalmiothamnus 'Sindelborg'
« on: October 08, 2021, 11:11:56 AM »
Hi everyone, I hope you are all safe and well and enjoying your gardens before the onset of winter?

Could someone please shed some light on a lovely Kalmia - Rhodothamnus cross that I acquired a number of years ago under the name

 x kalmiothamnus "Sindelborg"

It has made a superb little shrub (only 4 ctms tall), but I would be thrilled to gain some knowledge of the provenance?

Many thanks in anticipation.

x kalmiothamnus "Sindelberg" is the correct name  for this little cutie, Cliff.
The original  cross was  made  in around 1978 by that master of the ericaceous shrub, Barry Starling.
Parents are Rhodothamnus chamaecistus,  from Europe and the NW American Kalmiopsis leachiana.

See here for more  info on the plant wonder that is Barry Starling:

A man who has made many stunning bigeneric hybrids and raised super rhododendrons too.
Quite something to think that the  x kalmiothamnus 'Sindelberg' was made as far back as 1978 - when we were all a lot younger!
