Plants from around the world and their cultivation – talks by Michael Myers. Michael is a lecturer in horticulture and countryside at Craven College, Skipton.
A lifetime's interest in plants is readily combined with that of hard landscaping, exploring for plants in the wild and writing about them. He is a keen grower of rock garden plants and is an exhibitor at AGS shows. One of his passions is snowdrops of which he has over 400 varieties.
11 am 'Pterugiform and poculiform snowdrops' The pterugiform or inverse poculiform snowdrops have six tepals that all resemble the inner tepals, whilst the reverse is true for the poculiform snowdrops. Both groups are popular amongst snowdrop enthusiasts and this talk reviews some of the better selections.
12 noon – 12.15 pm Special General Meeting of the Scottish Rock Garden Club
2.00 pm 'Favourite woodlanders' This talk covers a range of bulbous plants, smaller herbaceous perennials and ferns, all suitable for the woodland border. The talk includes snowdrops, trilliums, erythroniums and roscoeas.
Display: Members are invited to bring as many pans of dwarf bulbs and early flowering alpine plants as possible. Space will be available for cut flowers of plants which members do not want to disturb in the garden. Please bring your own vases for cut flowers. Plants will be grouped according to genera during staging between 9 and 10 am. The rule of one pan per class per exhibitor will be waived. No points will be awarded. Members may also stage small displays comprising several exhibits to show variation in species etc. Every contribution increases the value of the display for others.
Plant sales: Contributions are invited to the 50:50 plant sale and raffle, which will be held to cover expenses. There will also be specialist nurseries attending.
Members are asked to help with the teas and plant stall as this day is organised by the Bulb Group rather than a local group.
All welcome!!
