So you mixed up our seasons... you're right : it IS Autumn now, I even think some members of the forum will state that it has been Autumn for 3 months.... 
My P. germinated in late Spring early Summer and are about 1" high now - I think I'll do as you and David write and let them alone outside for the Winter.  Only if a severe frost were to arrive (one never knows nowadays), I'd get them inside...

If anybody suggests anything else, let them now come forward....

If they germinated in spring then there is no need to worry about them at all.  I misread your first email to mean that they had only just germinated.  They only basically get one leaf the first season (well they only ever did for me anyway) then go dormant the following winter, so going dormant soon is not a problem for them. I'd be leaving them alone and not trying to bring them in at all.  Sorry I misinterpreted your posting.

I had planned to leave my P. cambessedesii seedlings outside, expecting the shoots to die back for the winter and re-sprout again next Spring with hopefully a couple more seeds germinating. Ever the optimist, should I be more pessimistic?

Here in southern Ireland mine survive fine outside, just sheltered by a hedge to keep the worst of the rain off, so I'd expect that yours should be okay there in Devon too.

If you dont want to wait 2 springs to see a seedling sprout when planted outside in the ground, I had seeds starting to germinate in about 3 months by this method.

...too bad I have not had the time and possibility to go thru' these pages... =O(   since these paeonia seeds would have bee just what the doctor discribed... well, guess I'll have to waint yet another year for some new seedlings of  paeonias... especially those treepaeonias
