Are fragrant snowdrops common
« on: February 13, 2010, 02:36:22 PM »
The reason ask this question is that i potted up a few Galanthus Elwesii and one of them is really fragrant i plan to keep this one isolated,i can't imagine the perfume off this plant once it has bulked up.Could you please tell me if there are any others i could collect.

Off the top of my head as the others are all, no doubt, at the Gala!
Galanthus 'Curly'
G. plicatus can be fragrant
G. 'Bess'
G. reginæ-olgæ 'Cambridge' - wallflowers
G. 'Compton Court'
G. 'Ginn's imperati' - bitter almonds
G. 'Kyre Park' - violet
scented
G. 'Nothing Special' heavily scented
G. 'S.Arnott' - honey as is Galanthus 'Seagull'

It has to be said that, like all scents, it depends on your nose  ;D Of course if they are pot-grown they can be brought inside to enhance the experience, but outside you are lucky if, at this time of the year (especially this year), you get a good sunny day to spread the scent round the garden!

G. 'Ginn's imperati' - bitter almonds

I've read this description of the scent of Ginn's Imperati before and I have to say it puzzles me greatly.
To me the description denotes a "dangerous" scent, that is to say a scent  which flags up the fact of a  poisonous nature ... and I cannot say that I detect any such note to the fragrance, which I find very appealing. :-X :-\
Perhaps my sense of smell is odd.... or perhaps I'll just eat anything!

Galanthus 'Brenda Troyle' has a lovely scent, to me reminiscent of Narcissus jonquilla

There was a famous film involving Bo Derek, honey and rose petals ( further details available via private message). Rev Hailstone smells like that - a sweet scent almost as good as Daphne bholua. :P

Trymlet seems a heavy scented one - I think maybe a 'bitter almond' smell too (though I am not really sure what bitter almonds would smell like - but the words seem to fit for some reason :-\ )

Today I walked into a large room full of snowdrops for sale and their scent was very noticeable.
Almost in Scotland.

was sorting out some drops for sale/swap this morning at home, much nicer in front of the log burner than sat on a cold concrete floor at work  ;D and it didn't take long for the room to fill with scent, had approx 200 nivalis to pack up and they were noticably scented once warmed up.

someone gave me a Reverend Hailstone recently, the scent from that having been in a warm car was lovely & very strong.
