Look what I just found
« on: April 04, 2009, 07:17:55 PM »
The snow is finally melting here, and I just found these. ;D
I think I must have planted them too deeply as the stems are only a few inches high, should I dig them up and replant them later?
Can someone tell me what sort of snowdrop they are?
Needless to say, I am thrilled  ;D ;D ;D

No idea what they are Helen, but they look really nice.  Someone will come along and give you advice.  Friends in Ontario telling me its still to cold to do much gardening, but itching to get going now.  Won't be long....

First flowers - wonderful!  (They won't be along for a few weeks here.)  I wonder if the short stems have something to do with the climate?  Galanthus never get so tall here for me as in warmer zones.

I'd leave them and see if they put on a bit more height on their own, which they may well do.

They look fine from where I'm sitting. As Martin says, they will gain in height.

Chris, it got up to +20C here today, could not believe my eyes as it was supposed to rain all day.
Today was the first time I could see what has been going on under all the snow we've had.

Lori, I wonder if they actually flower under the snow?
Where they are was under snow yesterday.

Martin, thank you, it's good to know what they are, I can see more starting to poke through the surface.

Anthony, I hope you and Martin are right about gaining some height eventually, I had to get down on my belly on the wet ground to take the pics.

Helen, yes, they probably do flower as the light reaches them through the melting snow... one often sees photos showing them in bloom as the snow melts around them.  (I don't normally see this, though, as we don't usually have lasting snow cover.)

I'm thinking of starting a 'Galanthus April' thread, as 'Baxendale's Late' is late and platyphyllus in the garden is just opening. The one bulb I planted there seems to have split into three, as I have two flowering and one non-flowering shoots. ;D

Helen  - That would make you a full fledged Galanthophile.

I had visions of you being still under snow.

I have some nivalis here for you.

Same flower today.
I didn't realize they changed so much from day to day.
The stem has also grown a few inches .
