Mystery shrub
« on: March 30, 2009, 01:10:09 PM »
Hi, I took a photo of this shrub last week, it has an 'open' habit, not a tight bush at all, and was flowering on bare stems.  Height about 4ft.  Does anyone have its name please?

Hello, Christine.... the shrub is a Corylopsis of some sort..... there are quite a few species shown in the Forum... try a search to see if you can find a "fit" !!

Wow, thanks Maggi.  it looked just wonderful when I saw it.  Now I have the name I can check the owner's plant list and find it.  What a great place this is!

Chris,
the higher Corylopsis are C. spicata, C. glabrescens, C. griffithii and C. willmottiae. Have you a picture of the hole shrub?

Sorry, Uli, I don't, and its not in my own garden.  Next time I go to Molly's I'll take a photo of the shrub but it will, by then, have foliage on it too I expect.  Sure did look pretty!

Take a look at Corylopsis pauciflora. While it's not possible to say with certainty from the picture we have, I'd say it's pretty bloomin' close....

the garden belonged to a botanist, and he collected many interesting plants in his lifetime.  Trevor's ambition was to grow one of everything..... I'll take a closer look at this lovely shrub next I'm there, but I think it will be May.  Thanks very much for all your help, folks.
