I think that it is mainly cold. Two regia hybrids survived a few years ago when we had an unusually mild (but not dry) wilnter.
However, I agree. Larger ones may be more sensitive.

They rot away here even in "English" winters, I guess I could try covering them, but I'm not sure it's worth the trouble...

Going slightly off-topic, are any of you growing "aff. grandis (2833w) ex Tibet" from the Mec Group seed list 2007? It's certainly not M. grandis, nor any other species I'm familiar with

I do, but only in leaf, I was hoping someone had flowered it. It's completely decidous, with a thin tap root and resting bud like that of M. delavayi. It was "collected in south east Tibet, Kama Valley, between 4000 and 4500 m, on an east-facing slope between rocks and dwarf Rhododendrons."

I asked a friend who is a 'meconopsis man' and he says he believes that M. pseudointegrifolia is a likely bet, given the appearance and provenance but that further photos in a week or so should help

Thanks, Maggi! They do look very similar, the possibility had not occured to me as my other M. pseudointegrifolia stay more or less evergreen. (And I guess the complete lack of vigor this plant has had me wishing it would be that other native of the Kama Valley...)

Aha! I see what you mean.... we have a photo of that, sent us by the Thornes when they first found and photographed it.... I cannot find it at the moment.... I think it is the first one on the page of your link, if my memory serves me well.

I've grown M. nepaulensis to flowering a few times, although I didn't find it particularly impressive.  Those thick hairy leaves did tend to rot in winter but not enough to take the whole plant with them.

There's apparently a third one growing alongside the Yetis, it finally flowered, and is a rather insipid M. simplicifolia.
