looking for some irisses (Onco's, Regelia,...)
« on: August 27, 2010, 07:56:25 AM »
Hi,

I'm looking for the following Irisses:

Iris barnumae
Iris drepanophylla
Iris iberica ssp. elegantissima
Iris iberica ssp. lycotis
Iris microglossa
Iris korolkowii
Iris paradoxa
Iris sprengeri
Iris warleyensis
Iris wendelboi

Does anyone know where I might be able to buy them from?

Hi Wim !
You can start with checking the Janis Ruksans and Leonid Bondarenko catalogues - they should cover part of your wants list.
(Will be too late for this year I guess)

Hello Wim,
I might be able to help with some of them, will send you a PM.
Janis was offering lycotis, elegantissima, korolkowii and sprengeri.
there is Tony dickerson of westonbirt plants and Leonid Bodarenko of Lit Bulbs sells paradoxa atrata, Norman Stevens sometimes has barnumae forms and paradoxa paradoxa.
If you ever get a source for depranophylla, microglossa or wendelboi I should be very interested. Are depranophylla, or wendelboi in cultivation? I think I saw a plant of wendelboi once at Kew. There are pictures of these on Jan Jileks website.

Thanks guys,

I ordered some bulbs from both Janis and Leonid this year but I forgot to look at the Irisses (only now I've seen I have some place left and I want to try them) so I was wondering if anyone might be growing them and would be willing to sell me some. I'll have a look at the Westonbirt list.

@ Peter: I'll PM you

Wim you might also be interested in joining the Aril Society International as we have a plant sale and also a seed exchange which can include quite a few species.

Does Jan Jilek still do a seed list?

I have heard very mixed reports of Jan Jilek, I think there may be a language barrier. He issued a seed list this year, I had no confirmation untill he replied to me that the seeds were in transit, but the seeds arrived, and I sowed them yesterday.
This is the first time I have had material from him.
There is also mention of him in a thread 'Blue Corydalis'

I got an order from him in 2003 that was good, so I've tried to re-order several times since then. Despite occasional communication from Jan, these orders have never even been confirmed, let alone actually been processed. Once he was apparently ill, but even so I've tried most years since then and got nowhere....so now I've given up. If anyone works out how to order from him, please do let me know.

I have had both a seed list and a bulb list from him dated 2010 by Email, don't know how he got my address as I hadn't contacted him. Neither seem to have any ordering instructions? Of course these may have been included in a covering Email which I didn't keep for some reason. Both lists are PDF files so if anyone would like copies Email me off Forum.

Hello David, I think this would be the list I orderd the seed from, it came in July. The seed was sent on 18th of August,- no invoice or payment instructions. The price on the list was 5€ per packet, essentially I got what I orderd, a couple of extras and one item not included.
I emailed him to ask how he wished to be paid, having previously suggested I might send a cheque in uk pounds. He asked me to send an international money order in euros.
last night he sent me some pictures of cultivated I nicholi and rosenbachiana growing like naturalised crocus. I replied and asked if I might still buy a juno from his list, and if he ever had another species to which he replied with the price, and that the other juno might be available next year.

Thanks for the link Maggi, and the note too Peter.

I've had seed from him just once, in 2005 and there was excellent germination on absolutely everything so I'd like to have another go.
