Interesting photos from Moorbank, Davey, thank you.
I only know this place by reputation because of John (Primula Book!) Richards, who was responsible for the move of many of R.B. Cooke's plants from his place Kilbryde to Moorbank. John is still involved with the gardenand often mentions the Moorbank rock gardens in his Northumberland Blog on the AGS website.

Maggie i was told by Clive about John Richards involvement in the gardens and hope to meet him one day in the future. They have quite a nice little collection coming on off Rhododendron donated by a certain famous chap but the name escapes me,also i met a lovely woman named Linda France she's a local poet. All in all a good day.
Next time i will photograph the rock gardens etc.

I live in Newcastle but am ashamed to say I have never been here but I visited the Edinburgh Botanical gardens last year. You've inspired me to pay a visit this year!

Thank you Davey P for publicising The University of Newcastle Botanical Gardens at Moorbank for which my wife Sheila and I run the outside volunteers, the only gardening that takes place in the fairly intensive 4 acre garden outside. I hardly need to say that we are kept very busy and have a lot of fun when we meet on Friday mornings. If you want to join us, or to organise a visit to the garden, please email me at hightreesgarden@btinternet.com  We open four times a year for NGS and the first opening in 2011 is on March 27th. As this is the day after the Northumberland Show, you could stay overnight in the NE and come along on the Sunday afternoon! As well as the excellent collections under glass, there is a lot to see outside with bulbs, shrubs, trees, alpine beds, rhodos and much more. Here are a few photos with Galanthus nivalis 'Sandersae' and 'Flore Pleno', Crocus 'Cream Beauty', and from last spring, Primula malvacea and Pulsatilla vernalis all flowering unprotected outside.

As we are only allowed 500 kb with each post, here are a few more from last year, Hamamelis 'Pallida', Rhododendron thomsonii and the grass garden.,

Wonderful to see these photos from Moorbank, John... and a very good idea to make a grand weekend at the Northumberland show and then the Open day.

An aside: The limit is 500kb per picture, not per post- though as you will have seen, smaller pictures of around 100kb are quite adequate. With pressure of use on the server, attempts to upload many pictures  (to maximum 10 per post) may encounter some problems - if t you find that then please try later.  ;)
