Ranunculus calandrinoides
« on: March 27, 2011, 03:30:40 PM »
Hello,

last year I got some ln seed of Ranunculus calandrinoides. It was sown in summer and germinated in late autumn. All made 2 cotyledons and a single normal leaf - so I think this is normal. I kept it frost free and will try to kee them green as long as possible!

But what about summer rest. I would not give them a summer baking, but will they survive 5 dry month in a rather cool place? Shall I water them every now and then?

Your suggested treatment will be totally adequate and your plants should plump up and reappear at the appropriate time.  One or two soakings during the dry period will be ample but not absolutely necessary.

Is this treatment the same for Rr. crenatus and parnassifolia?

No Eric,
R. crenatus and R. parnass' require a different regime.  They both relish ample moisture from early spring through flowering and then whatever mother nature throws at them through the summer.  These two resent mollycoddling and will thrive outside all year in the U.K. providing they receive adequate drainage. This is also true of R. alpestris, R. seguieri, R. montanus, R. traunfellneri, R. thora, R. hybridus and several others.

Ta. Just sown the seeds of both of these (green seed, hope that is right, usually is for that family). So I will put the pots in the shade house and see what happens.
The mother plants can go on the new Crevice garden, drainage there is pretty fierce.
