I was expecting a Helianthemum
« on: June 17, 2011, 08:22:21 PM »
I was expecting a Helianthemum because that's what the label said but it's now obvious that it isnt. It does look familiar but what is it? Where should I plant it?

Is it an Onosma?

If others agree, I would like to know where you bought it.

Certainly looks like an Onosma (lucana perhaps?) ... very pretty Mark, look after it!

Give it a dry, sunny spot Mark !  It should do allright.
I don't know what Onosma it is, but a lot of them are bi-annual but will seed around and sprout again next year !

This is Onosma nanum

I was going to suggest O. arenoides or O. nanum.... I think O. lucana is too grey and furry in the foliage to be the one Mark shows.  :-\

It's a pretty thing, isn't it!!?  As are the others shown as well.  Another genus I've never heard of before.
Cheers.

Mark there a few lovely Onosmas from Anne in NY state, in one of the crevice gardening threads - among other stunning plants.

I suppose if you only saw the leaves and seed pods you could mistake it for a helianthemum at harvest time? Are you disappointed Mark, or is this mistake a bonus?
