Shrub & Tree Identification
« on: February 20, 2012, 07:21:56 PM »
I would be very grateful if somebody could identify the two plants I show below.

They are both from Turkey.

The first is a shrub growing to approx 2m. tall.

The second is a substantial tree that was used to line the middle of a dual carriageway.

Thanks in advance

Hi Art ,

I think I can help you wit a ID for the first shrub from Turkey :

Thats Styrax officinalis - I have seen this plant also in Turkey + Greece

My own expierince with this plant was not succsessful - I have bought before many years a plant from a botanical garden ...it grows well in summer ...but if comes hard winters always a part was frozen .
I have also collect seeds from a trip in Greece - they have germinatet well ...but the problem comes in winter too ...so I have given up with this plant .
They are relatet with Halesia....

I hope this helps

Thanks Hans - now you mention it, there is a similarity with the Halesia I have in my front garden.

I believe (with the help of a friend) the tree is a Bauhinia.

Many thanks - thought it might be but needed your confirmation.

If only it would grow in this country - it would be so much better than the Lime trees they plant along roadsides that ooze a sticky substance that can be difficult to remove from your car, or syscamores that spread their seeds far and wide.
