Lanhydrock House and garden-23 March 2012

Beautiful day today and we decided to pay our first visit of the year to Lanhydrock which is in Cornwall just outside Bodmin. It's about 45 minutes drive for us.

The Magnolias were outstanding, many of the Rhododendrons were in full flower with others still to come and most of the Camellias were just about past their best. At Lanhydrock they have a 15 meter long archway over which magnolias have been trained. We haven't yet seen this in full flower and although there were plenty of buds it needed about another couple of weeks.

Most of the pictures are un-titled with just one or two where I was able to photograph the name plate and the plant together.

The weather does look glorious David.... I can believe it hit 20 degrees.  It must have been promising to tempt you out and about on a non-Wednesday 

I am devoted to rhododendrons, as you know.... but crikey... when I see that range of magnolias I find myself coveting those trees. There is something very "showgirl" about the blossoms on the bare trees. The range of shapes and colours is delightful... though I have a soft spot for the biggest, darkest pink ones.

I liked Rhodo. 'Satrap' Maggi, it couldn't make up it's mind if it was white or pink.

Yes, there are a few azaleas that do that two-tone thing. Just when they feel like it, I think!
'Satrap' isn't one I know. Perhaps because it is from North American breeding.


Edit: Yes, I thought so... it's an American hybrid... from the Glenn Dale stable .... some info here :

 (I should know more about these... the hybrids were made by a Morrison... my maiden name was Morrison- no relation though.... my American relatives weren't in Maryland, they were landscaping in Florida and were on my Mother's side of the family

The views on the hill are magnificent. Having been there in October and looking at the names of the trees I could only imagine how it would be in spring.
It really is a marvellous place.
