Garden Center findings
« on: April 10, 2013, 04:29:58 PM »
Servus,

today I saw two interesting types when strolling through a plant center nearby.
First a Calanthe, described as hardy
second an Asarum, also said to be hardy here

Can anybody help with identification?

Asarum is A. maximum, the "Panda Ginger."

Missouri, at the northeast edge of the Ozark Plateau

It is amazing to me to see these large plants in a garden centre  :o

I think the Calanthe might be Calanthe aristulifera

Thanks Maggi and Afloden!

After checking the internet, I do not think, that any of the two can be grown outdoors here. After some mild winters, some gardeners hoped that Austria developes to zone 8 - but the last winter showed them the truth!
Nevertheless nice plants although not really cheap!

Asarum maximum is 1000 % hardy here in Belgium (-18°C during winter 2012);
The only problem wioth asarums are slugs, slugs, slugs, ...!
