Flowering now - lost label bulb
« on: September 15, 2013, 06:48:36 PM »
I planted this bulb years ago at the base of the garage wall, and until now it has done nothing except put up a clump of leaves in the spring. Suddenly these 3ft long flowering stems appear! It been these so long I have forgotten what it is, but could it be Amaryllis belladonna?

It is Amaryllis belladonna, from South Africa. The off purplish velvety sheen of the scape is typical of this species.

Hi Ezeiza. Could it also be a Lycoris maybe?

Lycoris squamigera? But, in that case the tepal tips would end more rounded.

This is Crinum x powellii. I planted this around the same time as the lost label bulb and it has flowered every year and formed a huge clump. As you can see, big strappy leaves at flowering time.

I don't recall ever buying Rhodophiala. I have Lycoris squamigera but it hasn't flowered yet. I'm pretty certain the lost label bulb is Amaryllis belladonna.

Amaryllis.  I thought it was Amarcrinum until I looked at the first picture again.

Hi Ralph,
If you have the Crinum in flower as well you have a great chance to do some hybridizing! Do you think you'd have enough frost free weather left to ripen seeds?
cheers

Doubtful. It was down to 5oC last night and we could get a frost anytime now.
