A friend sent me this picture of a seeding plant she found while weeding. It is about 2 feet tall and there are no leaves to help with id. She does not recognise it. I haven't a clue. Does anyone out there know it?

Yes Mark that was my first thought. It looks just like the Millet we used to put in the Budgies cage.

Thanks Mark and Shelagh for your thoughts. I have passed on your comments to my friend but have not heard from her yet.

It seems to be an infructescence of one of the following two; Aruncus aethusifolius or an Astilbe.

I found this plant growing in a patch of grass. There were several clumps like this.

I should have said that this was a large patch of council mown lawn. Other weeds included a pink Oxalis, as well as the usual plantains, daisies (British and South African), dandelions and clover.
