In search of Narcissus cavanillesii in Australia
« on: April 15, 2014, 12:11:45 PM »
Howdy Folks,

Does anyone here in Australia grow N. cavanillesii?  It is an unusual autumn flowering species that has no cup/trumpet to speak of, and looks almost more like an autumn crocus in appearance.  Does anyone here actually grow it?  I posted this within the autumn flowering topic, but then thought it might be best to post a direct topic for it instead/as well.  I don't know whether it is grown here in Aus, but I'm putting out feelers in various places to see if I can find a source?

Thanks heaps folks.
Cheers.

Hmmm...... I take it this absence of response does not bode well for finding it here in Australia then?
Cheers.

I managed to get seed imported, but it'll be a while before I see any flowers.

Thanks Anthony.  I was hoping it may have already been here somewhere.
Cheers.

Thanks Anthony.  I was hoping it may have already been here somewhere.

Might it not be in Oz, even if not in NZ ?

Yes Maggi, that is what I was hoping.  However, given there is quite a wide audience here there has been no indication as yet, nor on the facebook forums I have posted the request either.   >:(

still hoping thought.  ;-)
Cheers.

Yes Paul the silence seems to mean that there is not a source. Or is it that the source is not on line.

Paul , like Anthony in Auckland I received seed of this species from the AGS seed distribution . Lets hope they germinate and flower for us in 3-4 years .

The only autumn flowering species I've not managed to get seed of is Narcissus elegans. I'm so confused with obsoletus/miniatus/serotinus. I have pots with seeds/seedlings of all three, but the serotinus came from the seed exchange, so could be a mixture of all three, and the obsoletus may have changed its name since I got the seeds in 2011. None has flowered yet.

Anthony,

The obsoletus that originated from Hans J a while back has done very well for me and flowers each year now with little to no care (and believe me, the last couple of years that is quite literal).  I must have had 15 or 20 flowers this year from them.  Just lovely.  They're the only one of that type that I grow, not elegans or anything like that, although I would like to.

Good luck with the cavanillesii Otto.  Fingers crossed.  I've had absolutely zero success in finding anyone who grows it in Australia.
Cheers.

My obsoletus sown May 2011 is yet to flower, and doesn't look as if it will this year. Plenty of growth though.
