Talk by Dan Hinkley at Evolution Plants
« on: February 01, 2014, 07:54:57 PM »

Evolution Plants open day,
plus a talk from celebrated US plantsman
Dan Hinkley

Following the successful launch of the online nursery Evolution Plants last autumn, owner and 21st century plant hunter Tom Mitchell is opening the nursery gates to the public for the first time, for a special open day on Saturday 10 May, 2014.

Passionate gardeners looking for something new to grow in their gardens will have the opportunity to visit the nursery, located in near Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire, to see the amazing collection of perennials, trees, shrubs, orchids and bulbs from around the world, many of which have never been seen in the UK before.

Alongside the open day Tom is delighted to announce that gardeners will also have the opportunity to hear a talk given by renowned US plantsman, author and plant hunter Dan Hinkley, who will be talking about his recent plant hunting exploits in Myanmar, Vietnam and China.

The talk will be held in the Village Hall in South Wraxall, close to Evolution Plants.
Due to the likely demand to hear Dan speak, the event will be by ticket only, priced at just £5, redeemable against any plants bought on the day.

Tom will conduct several tours of the nursery throughout the day, with the aim of showcasing some of the new species Evolution Plants is cultivating. There will also be demonstrations of the techniques used in raising plants from seed and propagating rare snowdrops by twin-scaling.

Speaking about the open day Tom said, “As Evolution Plants is primarily an online nursery, we are really looking forward to welcoming visitors onto the 13 acre nursery site so they can see how we grow and propagate our diverse range of rare plants. We do not generally open to the public, so having this special day gives us a chance to meet plant enthusiasts and introduce them to a whole world of temperate plants that many will be unaware of. We hope we can inspire our visitors to experiment with growing better, more interesting, more exciting garden plants, while contributing to the conservation of some endangered species in the process.“

He continued, “Having Dan Hinkley visit us to give a lecture is really exciting. The nursery that he founded, Heronswood, set the gold standard for plantsmans’ nurseries; he is the pre-eminent contemporary plant hunter and his books are essential reading for anyone interested in cutting-edge horticulture.’ His presentation on recent travels to the biodiversity hotspots of East Asia will be fascinating.”

Dan Hinkley is a wonderful speaker so I guess that will be sold out quickly. I like the Clematis and Viburnum seed picture at the end of his notes. I thought for a moment it was Miss Lily on a bad hair day, or perhaps a newly washed hair day. ;D

Following  a great demand for tickets, the talk by Dan Hinkley has been relocated to allow for a larger audience :
http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/plant-hunting-in-myanmar-vietnam-and-china-a-lecture-by-dan-hinkley-tickets-10391823223

Dan Hinkley is one of the the most prominent contemporary plant hunters on the planet. The nursery he set up in the USA, Heronswood, set the gold standard for imitators whose passion is introducing new plants from the wild into cultivation. His books 'The Explorer's Garden' have opened the eyes of thousands of readers to the endless horticultural possibilities of new and exciting plant introductions.

To coincide with Evolution Plants' first public open day on 10 May 2014, Dan will give a lecture on his recent travels in Myanmar, Vietnam and China in search of new plants. Dan is a compelling speaker, drawing on a huge fund of stories accummulated over decades in the field.

Admission to the lecture is strictly by ticket only and places are limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment. The £5 ticket price is redeemable against plants bought on the day at the lecture venue or at Evolution Plants, which is ten minutes drive away.

The lecture is being hosted by Paul and Caroline Weiland, owners of Belcombe Court, which has 50 acres of extraordinary gardens tucked away in Bradford-on-Avon. The £5 ticket price includes admission to the gardens. We are donating 15% of the proceeds of plant sales on the day to the Red Cross, the charity that Paul and Caroline support through opening their garden.

Everyone is welcome at the open day and entry is free. There will be cakes and hot and cold drinks for sale both at the lecture and the open day. Plants will be available for sale both at the lecture venue and at the nursery.

Edit by maggi : with the demise of Evolution Plants the website /blog has gone.
