Amaryllis Belladonna - white
« on: February 22, 2015, 08:24:59 PM »
I feel like a kid that received a beautiful new toy with this white flowering Amaryllis Belladonna that started to open the first of the 21 flowers. This is the first time this bulb is flowering. The petals look like silk as you will notice on the first photo. It is also scented.

So beautiful! And there are 21 buds?  Wow! No wonder you're a happy man, Heinie.
That flower even "looks" like it smells good.

Hi Heinie,
the radial symmetry of the flower head indicates that this is one of the intergeneric hybrids (Amaryllis x Brunsvigia, or x Cybistetes) but mostly sold as "Belladonnas".
A lot of breeding was done in Australia and California - was yours sourced locally? Are there Amaryllis breeders in South Africa? It would many sense since you are the country of origin!
cheers

Fermi,

Thank you for your description. I obtained the bulb from a friend in South Africa.

Hi Heinie,
if you have Cybistetes or Brunsvigia or nerine in flower it might be interesting to see what sort of hybrids you could raise.
Here the first of our white belladonnas is now in bloom, but won't have as many flowers as yours,
cheers

Wonderful white belladonna Heinie!
 :o

I would cross the Nerine filifolia with the white belladonna (Pollen from belladonna on Nerine because the filifolia is so small flowered that the pollen tube maybe cant grow long enough. This problem i know from orchids, maybe its the same with Amaryllids?)

and the Brunsvigia orientalis i would cross with white belladonna and reverse

 :)
