World Woodland Garden at the Chelsea Physic Garden, London

The World Woodland Garden, opening in April 2015, celebrates forest environments from around the world and the medicinal and useful plants that they produce. The World Woodland Garden is divided into three geographic regions, Americas, Europe and East Asia, and each region demonstrates the traditional and modern uses of various forest species including trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and bulbs.

Features of the new Garden:

150 new plants will be added to the collection, including a number of ornamental species grown to enrich the seasonal interest of the woodland

15 wild species of Galanthus will be woven through the planting to further enrich the Gardens existing snowdrop collection

A serpentine path will guide visitors through the new plantings; this path reflects the wilderness area that occupied that part of the Garden in the 1700s

Gathering spaces throughout the woodland area allow the Garden’s volunteer guides to present the collection to groups of visitors

Low earth banks will define the three geographic regions and provide a sense of enclosure

An oak pergola to the south of the World Woodland Garden will link it to one of the Garden’s existing wooded areas, effectively creating a ½ acre micro-forest.

The World Woodland Garden will support the Gardens key aims in highlighting human’s historic and contemporary usage of plants, helping to further connect visitors with the plants around them.

Chelsea Physic Garden
Connecting people with plants since 1673

This year the Garden is delighted to present a ‘companion to the Garden’. This guide book can be used to accompany a visit to the Garden but is also a memento of all the Garden has to offer. It provides an insight into the Garden’s rich history, current plant collections and botanical work.
The book traces the Garden’s history from its founding by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London in 1673, and the instruction of trainee apothecaries ensuring that they could distinguish between plants that help fight disease and those which could be deadly. The Society of Apothecaries’ Coat of Arms, which remains on the Garden’s Embankment Gates (and on the books cover), illustrates this original aim as does the motto “throughout the world I am the bringer of health”. This original purpose of the Garden continues today through its education programme and garden displays such as the Garden of Medicinal Plants and the World Woodland Garden.
Written by Head Gardener, Nick Bailey, the book takes the reader through the Garden with beautiful photography illustrating the history and importance of each area on the detailed map. Including the new World Woodland Garden, Garden of Medicinal Plants, the Garden of Edible and Useful Plants and the History Beds, which highlight the pioneering plantsmen who introduced many of the plants which we now take for granted.
The book covers all aspects of the Garden, even including an instruction on the understanding and de-coding of plant labels, and will be available to purchase from the Garden for only £5.

Bet they struggle to fill them. The average house price in London is £514,000 and to travel in from a (relatively) cheaper area would take a high proportion of their income.

But David to work there would be pretty impressive on your resume. Is the new garden in the far side from the entrance gate? there isn't that much space there as it is.

Pat, having had to sleep in shop doorways and on the points of starving to death I don't suppose it would matter all that much!
