Propagators.
« on: February 11, 2016, 08:27:16 AM »
A couple of years ago I bought a fancy, thermostatically controlled, Vitopod propagator. It waited until just after the warranty ran out before developing a fault in the electronic thermostat.

I remember from my fishkeeping days (over 20 years ago) that the old bi-metallic strip aquarium thermostats lasted years, but the 'safer' electronic replacements would die on a yearly basis. It seems things have not changed.

I'm considering a replacement but am reluctant to spend £130 on what looks like being an annual purchase. I don't want the really basic ones that have no thermostat but suggestions would be welcome please.

I do have a couple of other possibilities:

1/ I have a separate thermostat, no longer used. I could attempt to replace the Vitpod thermostat with this. I'd need to investigate the wiring and don't feel especially confident about it. We are replacing the greenhouse this summer anyway but don't want to burn the existing one down!

2/ Use the separate thermostat but buy some soil warming cable and build my own base (possibly using the vitopod lid with it).

Darren, I bought a heat mat with a thermostat and just roll it out when needed. I set the trays with covers on top of it and throw a piece of fleece over it for shade if needed.

Thanks Michael,

A good idea and indeed a possibility, and I could utilise the existing cover over several trays/pots.
